In short

UNID is a committee within the department of Industrial Design. It is created by students and for students. Multiple times a year, a magazine is created and produced and launched from the very beginning of brainstorming about topics, till the finetuning of graphics and launch event. By joining this committee in the 2nd year of by bachelor's, I aimed at getting my first hands-on experience with Adobe InDesign and delivering work on demand as a photographer.

My work

My original position was in the visuals team, both responsible for photography and graphic design. As a photographer, I got the task of accompanying the written articles with corresponding photos. Therefore, I either wandered around on-site, developing my own photography skills, or reached out to companies who could possibly provide us with additional visual material.

Due to a lack of graphic designers within the team, I have also been granted the opportunity to enhance my graphic design skills. By doing so, I was able to get familiar with professional applications of Adobe, which are of great value for the realization and storytelling of designs as a designer.

By additionally joining the promotion cluster, organizing launch events, but also keeping track of the UNID brand, I managed to get my first hands-on experience with real-life business cases in my bachelor's. While frequently ideating about strategies to reach ID students, being the target group, I adopted effective approaches for pinpointing user demands and meeting them. Also, being responsible for organizing the launch events has given rise to a professional perspective on the financial and logistic perspectives of realizing ideas.

The U44 team

Other than getting my first experience with delivering work on demand in real-life scenarios, I got to experience the ins and outs of the development of a magazine and the extensive teamwork required for this. This is useful, not only in the future work for this committee but also in other future projects in which teamwork is required. A key insight was the required regular communication between different departments of the team, as the visuals must correspond with the idea the article writer had in mind, which can only be correctly understood by clear communication rather than only reading the article itself. Furthermore, I managed to get out of my comfort zone by applying my passion for photography in new areas, such as in the presence of other people or out in the open. Learning to do this will be beneficial as a designer, for example when seeking feedback from experts or stakeholders in design projects.
