In short
Team IGNITE, the first Art & Tech student team in the Netherlands, focuses on displaying the potential of light for societal impact.
This is achieved through the multidisciplinary efforts of students from the Eindhoven University of Technology, Fontys, Avans and the Design Academy. This student community consists of a management team and multiple design projects, forming an ecosystem of students interested in lighting in which knowledge is shared and ideas are co-created with and in assignment of stakeholders from the BrainPort area (and beyond). As a result, a safe environment is created where community members can explore and improve their technical, design, and management skills.
Why Team IGNITE?
With a team of 42 creative engineers from the Eindhoven University of Technology, Fontys, Avans and the Design Academy, a multidisciplinary approach serves the unique base to make an impact. In contrast to other student teams which focus on a single end product, Team IGNITE focuses on the theme of light through a multitude of design challenges taken on by project teams. With a desire to further broaden my expertise in all competency areas used in the Industrial Design bachelor, the opportunity of taking part in the #1 board of Team IGNITE seemed to be the right environment to do so as well as to apply, validate and develop my thus far acquired knowledge and skills from the bachelor of Industrial Design.
Benefits of being a board member
Being a Communications Manager in the board of the team, I received the opportunity to apply and develop my skills in graphic design, branding and ideation, as well as being actively involved in other competency areas due to the team's multidisciplinary character. It offers a unique opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills, in addition to Industrial Design-related competencies. As a board member, one gains firsthand experience in managing projects, coordinating team members, and making strategic decisions. The role allows for personal growth and the development of a versatile skill set that extends beyond technical knowledge. In addition, receiving a broad range of opportunities to witness and contribute to the technological realization of real-world projects has elevated my professional skillset to another level.
Projects
In the course of my 1,5 board year at the team, a large variety of projects have been developed in addition to the pressure cookers that the team has facilitated. A brief overview of the projects is provided below.
Wayfinding - Paper Trails
An innovative approach for managing crowd flows at GLOW Eindhoven 2022 and 2023 by using light. An airplane is a symbol for bringing people to where they want to be and navigating to popular destinations, Paper Trails form the vessels that connect the beating hearts of GLOW, the light installations.
Unplugged
Let’s spark Eindhoven’s energy together. That was the aim of project Unplugged, and what a success it has been! With Urban Skin being the theme of GLOW 2022, it fit perfectly. The Urban Skin of Eindhoven consists of the people who live there, work there, study there or otherwise feel a connection with the city. The installation successfully managed to visualize this relationship between city and people.
Studentenhart
Team IGNITE x SSRE collaboration: Bringing students to light as the beating heart of Eindhoven. Ask any Dutch person what Eindhoven is famous for, and there is a good chance you will hear the terms “city of light’” and “technology capital”. But with the bustling student life being an important part of Eindhoven’s Urban Skin, the objective during GLOW 2022 has been to put the students in the spotlight.
GLOWBLE
Confronting GLOW 2023 visitors with the consequences of their insatiable desire for constant technological engagement. By doing so, Team IGNITE’s objective is to prompt reflection upon the boundaries between interaction and obsession and our role in the interconnected world, seeking a harmonious balance between human connection and the allure of the digital world.
IGNITE Stepping Stones
In a one-week design sprint, the internal relations manager and I have taken the lead in a design case for enhancing the recruitment activities of Team IGNITE. The Team IGNITE Stepping Stones facilitate a playful interaction to introduce external people to the efforts and objectives of Team IGNITE, with enhanced production and transport capabilities taken into account.
